Overview

Public health is the art and science of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health through the organized efforts of society. Simply, public health promotes and protects the health of people and the communities where they live, learn, work and play. Public health professionals engage in activities which advocate for and promote policies that encourage healthy lifestyles, research in diseases, detection and prevention of injuries, and control of diseases. Many of the public health’s duties are the health issues that confront our daily lives like protecting our drinking water, maintaining a clean environment and waste disposal, ensuring car and road safety, providing vaccinations against diseases and epidemics, safer foods etc.

Objectives

The objectives of the ND programme in Public Health Technology are to:<br> i. Enable students acquire basic skill in Public Health<br> ii. Carry out community diagnosis and mobilization<br> iii. Conduct Health Education and promotion in the community<br> iv. Collect, analyse and present health data<br> v. Assist in sensitizing and counseling Community members to actively participate in Public Health programmes<br> vi. Participate in preventive and promotive in health care service delivery<br>

Programmes

National Diploma (ND) in Public Health Technology

The ND Public Health Technology is a programme structured to last for two (2) years (four semesters) of classroom work, laboratory and field practicum. The two (2) years programme incorporates 3-4 months SIWES (Supervised Industrial Work Experience Scheme), which shall take place at the end of the second semester of the second year.

Admission Requirements

The minimum entry requirements into the ND Public Health Technology programme are: <br> i. Five (5) credit passes in: WASC, NECO or GCE ‘O’ Level; at not more than two (2) sittings. <br> ii. The subject combination must include: English, Mathematics, Biology/Health Science, Chemistry and Physics
